Ok, I have been busy fiddling.
I tracked down a couple of Magna alternators second hand. One is a ratsh!t TN series but it was cheap. I wasn't happy with it so I found one from a 94 Verada. The mounts were better and the fan was internal on this one so more gooder on a couple of fronts. Next to no wear on the slip rings too.
I've soldered on the "W" wire for the tacho.
Before I cut up the original alternator mount, I migged up an adapter and fudged the adjuster bracket. The original MM pulley was a 62mm OD, and the friendly bods at the local auto elecs gave me a 61mm pully off I don't know what. This error with the tacho isn't worth worrying about with such a close match.
I set it up and it runs, but it's not charging. The field coil is fine with no grounding, the diodes seem OK (tested with 12V and a lamp). I think it's the regulator, and I think I zapped it by mistake with the wrong polarity (it was dark and I should have given up!).
PhilipA, the markings on the Magna regulator are "S" and "L". Which one is the smaller positive lead connected to on yours? I'll need to get a new regulator, but I don't want to root a second one!

It's done! (mostly!!!)
I have to refab one ov the brackets to correct the angle of the alternator pulley so it doesn't squeal, but it works a treat. Big thanks to the man behind the counter of the local auto electrician MJ Auto Electrical. Got the alternator tested there and he set me straight on the wiring.
I've taken a stack of photos which I will upload this weekend and post here.

TN Magna alternator from Pick A Part - $32 and some time.
1994 V6 Verada alternator from Ebay - $35 and a little less time.
Pulley from philanthropic auto elec - $0
Steel odds and sods - $0, from junk box
Took about 6 hours from start to finish, not including a bit of head scratching time. Worth doing to save the coin, plus I now understand how it all works. The understanding was the main objective actually!
Beats the bejesus out of whatever LR want for new Marelli poo!

It's done and the pics are up. I spent about another 6 hours farting around trying to make new mounts and was fed up by the end of it! Still got a little belt noise, but I think I need to let it settle into the new pulley then change the belt to a new one.
Does the 1994 D1 V8 with the serpentine belt have the same alternator?
Mine has a bearing whine and I am just collecting info before I pull it out.
I can't see any name plate on it with it still installed.

That little black box with the hiphenated number on it looks very familiar however mine has a big black plastic cover on the back as well.
I'll just follow the tidy up instructions from that link before I do anything crazy.
The RAVE CD says it is a A127/100. No idea what that means.
There's no reason that you couldn't make a Bosch fit the serpentine belt arrangement. Just can't advise what's involved since mine's the older style.
Incidentally, I tracked down the squealing noise in the Bosch (I think) and got some new bearings pressed on for $15. Still got to put it back together.
