    CV Joint

The RH CV on my County (PartNo: AEU2522) is making an awful noise on the left turn so I did a ring around for prices. Two suppliers in Perth, one quoted $250+ each and no stock, the other Rover Tech $194+GST each and plenty in stock. One supplier from Queensland $500/pair plus freight and Craddocks in England quoted @$100+GST each but the freight was $232 and take @ 5-7 days. This is about the third time that R/Tech have been the cheapest so I thought I'd give them a bit of a plug.

I'll do the work, however I thought the different prices were interesting, given the parts are imported anyway. Agree with you regarding Kevin, I have had a couple of dealings with him and he is always very accommodating.

The difference in price is the brand. Some people would have been quoting you on genuine (GKN) and some on allmakes/britpart (don't know if the last 2 are different). Both will probably last equally well on-road, but the GKN are definitely stronger offroad - only downside is they tend to explode the bell (or similar), whereas the others snap the stub.

Actually most CV joint "failures" I seem to hear of are neither exploded bells nor snapped stubs - they just get noisy, one would suspect due to either lack of lubrication or inadequate lubrication from the muddy water filling the swivel. So your observation that either would last equally well is probably right in these cases. The difference in strength is probably only a factor in aggressive offroad driving, and maybe then only if you are unlucky.

Try Hobzee on outerlimits4x4.com he runs a 4x4 business ( http://stores.ebay.com.au/The4wdshop ) and even has cvs on Ebay for $85. Worth a call at least. I have not bought anything from him, but spoken with him about compressors and found him straight with his answers etc.

    Keep phoning around

Paddock in UK sell Britpart AEU2522 CV joints for 28.20 pounds each. MM 4x4 sell them for 28.40 each. I've got some, haven't broken them yet. Can't remember postage cost but it wasn't $232.

At 28.20 pounds each get a spare couple then you won't have to wait 5 to 7 days next time.

When I break them I recon I'll get Ashcroft ones, they are guaranteed for life. Presumably 'life' is until they break.

John - I was seperating "failing" (i.e. catastrophically) from wearing out. I agree that most people without big tyres and a front diff lock wear them out rather than break them. And for this the most important factors are hardness and lubrication.

The new generation of super CVs (Ashcroft, longfield etc) are much softer than standard CVs - as they are made to withstand high stresses and shock loading. They would be expected to wear faster though (but a worn CV is better than a broken one).

Btw - I have actually seen more broken CVs than worn out ones. If the swivel oil is topped up and no water gets in they seem to last a long time.

    yes

Don't know about much softer - but certainly probably a bit softer, with the steel and heat treatment specified for ultimate strength rather than surface hardness. The conditions in a CV joint are not ideal, with the balls having point loading except to the extent they deform and enlarge the contact area - and then you have sliding contact!

I had one of mine out recently when replacing a swivel bush - and could see no signs of wear at 425k km. I think you are right - they last a long time if properly lubricated.
