    SU Carbs

Just picked up a secondhand motor to fit into my 81 RR 2door. For a bit extra picked up the SU carbs pictured. They fit on to a modified holley manifold. Does anyone recognise the set up. Motor being replaced has zenith strombergs fitted so is quite different set up. Any one know a good carb shop in Brisbane to get the extras from i.e. aircleaners and bracket for auto kickdown (these are off a manual). One carb has stamped on it MCDI and the other PDCI. Any help would be appreciated.

Thats a homemade job and it is rough at that, su's will fit a standard rover manifold and fit under the bonnet.

It was probably fine in its time, but in this day and age don't expect your insurance cover to cough up if there is a fire.

If you take the SU's off and put one of the strombergs on that intake manifold, you should find that it is a perfect fit. As loanrangie said, they fit - just swap manifolds and carbs ( You didn't say if it was P76 or a 3.5L - I'll presume 3.5). The linkages should go over too - both carbs have similar pivots and butterfly valves. ( ie mix and match) I researched this when I had my RRC - almost put a set of SU's on when I went diesel. As for that code, (and this is just an educated guess ) you'll notice the strombergs are handed (ie LH & RH). The SU's are too,

Good carburettors, SU's and CD Strombergs. Set them up properly and then, LEAVE THEM BLOODY WELL ALONE. Tie a ball of barbed wire around them to deter fiddlers. Everyone used to be a self-appointed SU & Stromberg expert and fiddled with them. This was the cause of most problems with them, other than wear in the throttle shafts giving incorrect vacuum signals to the pistons and diaphragms. For a V8 RR I would fit a Rochester Quadrajet.

    Red face

Your right of course Brian, they can be finnicky bloody things to set up though.
Lots of people forgot to lube the little plastic piston in the top cover of the SU, that one got me with my 1100 K. The Aussie built mini fitted with the Morris 1100 donk. Then there is the old split in the diaphram trick for newbies. Yep, that got me too. On a Jappa motorcycle.
I seem to remember the Rochester, was a pretty popular item with the boy-racers of the 70's. Had an XR Fairmont, with as much Carrol Shelby gear under it as I could afford, a mate had a "Ted Bullpit" Kingswood, with a Canadian 30something and a Rochester on top. One very fast Kingswood that was.

The main problem with the GM Rochester, both 2 and ESPECIALLY 4 bbl, was that the large "free" surface area inside their bowls made them prone to flooding when traversing the steep slopes a RR handles otherwise with aplomb.......or with almost anything else you'd put in the car!
