Valve Adjustment 300Tdi

The list grows longer and longer for problems with the Lada...

As far as weird and wonderful rattles, the fan bolts came loose on me once on the way back down from the farm.

Checked everything I could and couldn't find anything wrong but before I pulled the timing cover off I started it with no belts on and then just the air con belt and found it was coming from the main belt so I put my spare on and it was still there.

After checking every other bolt on all the pulleys and changing the bearing in the idler I discovered the fan bolts were just loose enough to make the rattle but not enough to give it any movement by hand.

So chuck a 10mm over the fan bolts, it gives an evil rattle.

yea i went throught the idler stuff too after checking loose bolts, ended up just regreasing it the idler bearing that is, was going to put a new one in, because i couldn't budge the circlip, but the supercheeeep holden ones were a bit too chromy for my liking. In the end the bearing was fine.


Just remembered another lada modification I did, got rid of the fan, and replaced it with an electric one, what a pain that was,
read about the mod in overlander i think, it was supposed to give you a bit more horsepower. ended up putting a hole in the radiator trying to get the bolts through. that was fun.
anyway, it didn't make it go like a scalded cat, so i resolved that to drive it like an old truck was the best approach.
then there was the guy from Lada aust racing who put , a v6 under the bonnet. i might still have the mag somewhere.

My Lada already had a therom fan setup. It was still the original radiator as it had the crank handle hole in the bottom!

Met a guy with a merc diesel converted Lada once.

You know youve got a great car when it has a crank handle hole in the radiator.

The rest of the world moved away from that in the 30's.

I also have seen a V6 in a lada niva.

A guy in thomastown in melbourne put a VN motor in one but it was an ordeal with sump modifacations and had to run a dry sump as there wasn't enough room for a big enough sump or something, he had to cut and shut the tunnel to fit the turbo700 auto and ran some other transfer case I cant remember what it was.

He said it goes like a cut cat but he couldnt drive it too hard in fear of breaking diffs and wheel bearings as well as the handling didnt match the speed.

He had it up for sale for $6500 about 8 or 9 years ago and I looked at it out of interest in the mod rather than wanting to buy it.

He reconed he spent over $10k on it just fitting the engine.

I dont think he would have sold it as he didnt engineer it so it would have been a nightmare to change the rego.

Makes a lot of sense though in such a cold climate. Mine was useless as the Fiat engine wasn't designed for a crank handle!

Bloody good heater though.... You could fry eggs about 5 minutes after starting
