As already covered by some of the other comments..

I also don't bother to try and crank the motor over with the starter.
A 17mm socket, t/bar on the crank is easy and if you do it in order (as per the LR manual or Haynes) you don't have to turn it far to do each one. I've trained my 12yo boy, I say "tell me to stop when No 6 is fully open" etc.

I don't remove glow plugs, why complicate a quick simple maintenance job?
If your worried about starting (how?) disconnect the battery.

The 300 TDi does have valve stem caps/clearance pads (whatever you want to call them) they should be checked for wear.

    Best regards

I've always simply set up on level ground, engaged 5th gear, handbrake off and rock vehicle to open required valve/s. It's simple, a one person job and has worked for decades for me.

Bit hard on a Disco to put it on the crank, I dont know about the deffender but Ive got a massive fan shroud that gets in the way, If you turn it the right way the serpentine belt turns the engine noworries off the alternator.

aside from the cranking options and disconnecting etc, i found it easier to put a 27mm socket on the bottom pulley a long rachet bar and rotate from the bottom, you don't have to worry about fan shrouds etc. helps if you use a mate or a child.

At the end of the day, once you have all the options just decide which one you feel more comfortable with,
As i said earlier, I am not overly happy with the cranking option, but like the glow plug removal, it won't start then regardless.

ohhh lol lol, yes but when a Lada (was it a Niva?) is actually running they are a top little off-road vehicle and would walk over any other 4WDrive in it's class. Just unfortunate they had really bad build quality..... hrmmm sound familiar..

    Gee that's a bit harsh
    Leaks yes plenty of them.
As they are rigid axle coil & constant 4WDrive, I found the onroad ride better and it was better offroad than other 4WDrives I've had such as leaf sprung Landies, Diahatsu F10, Suzuki LJ80 and also had a better top end speed.

Unreliable? gee once I rebuilt the gearbox with good bearings, motor, put radial tyres on it, put a weber carb on it, put extractors and a 2" exhaust on it, it was great.... in it's own Russian sort of way.

and that interior from the 1960's complete with factory paint runs was also a nice touch.
I never relied on it for everyday transport (but hell, my other vehicle was a Landie).
It never needed locking as nobody would steal it or even go near it.
It was ugly and no I never admitted to owning it.
Considering how badly I used to treat it, it was pretty tough.

Yes... But they are indestructable and the Fiat 2.0 drops straight in (I wonder where the Russians nicked their design from).
