Nope only the later "long nose" defenders have a booster fan for air con.

Its not technically a requirement for a vehicle with a engine driven fan.

But having one will increase the effectiveness of the A/C at low vehicle speeds and prevent excessively high A/C pressures. I wouldn't want an A/C system without one (or two).

Im thinking its your electric booster fan cutting in,much louder than the engine driven fan.
Try turning the aircon on at about the same speed/revs you do when off-roading with the window open,it will confirm if its the booster.
Once a overheat is registered that fan will run all the time until cleared by testbook.Even if the gauge hasnt looked like getting hot.
Start checking for bulging radiator hoses when hot, smelling slight sniffs of coolant after a hot run.Signs of a headgasket starting to leak.If you get it early you should getaway with the gasket only(and dowels if you still have plastic ones).
Hopefully Im wrong, but thats how mine started.

This noise is very apparent, but only when excellerating, the elec fans i know of and only work alot when the aircon is on.

In my D1 the viscous fan runs all the time when in low range even when its not that hot (low to mid 20s). Its considerably louder than the two little fans in front of the radiator. Also in heavy / slow traffic it will kick in too.
Its noisy but at least I know its still working.
