Taking the plate off doesn't take long but there are about 8 bolts. I forgot to add that mine apeared to have no abnormal movement. Although I do have some slack in the drivetrain somewhere. It would be good to test drive a Disco with a factory spec drivetrain to see the difference.

Don't know but I'll look into it one day. It isn't that bad at the moment I don't think.

    Hi inc,
I had the same prob on my Disco (MY 1995 incidentally). The lubrication of the main shaft splines is unsatisfactory that's why the later model years (from 1996 I think) have a modified fitting in the transfer case. You don't need to replace the complete gear box, just clean it out and replace the driveshaft and the relevant parts in the TC. You will, of course, have to get the gearbox out anyway.
If fitting a used/reconditioned one make sure it has the modified set already, otherwise you'll be in again another time.

My symptoms were exactly as described, slack in drivetrain and a "clonk" until one day, all of a sudden, the Disco refused to drive off. I have the main shaft somewhere in my garage, maybe I'll posta pic.

Cheers and "Good Luck" with the new beast!

There's a reconditioned Defender R380 on ebay at the moment. Starting at $1100.
