    Clunk clunk clunkety clunk!!

Ok I'm just about ready to get the green 110 road worthied next week.

I still have a couple things to sort out though.....one of them being a clunk coming from the rear of the vehicle when ever it is moving, as in driving done the road and theres a clunk with every bump in the road.

I suspect it's the A frame ball joint but just wanted to get an opinion from you guys before I go and get another one and change it etc etc....

I've checked all trailing arm bushes and they're fine.

The self levelling device is leaking badly and I will remove it completly before next week. Could it be this making the clunk if it's totally flogged out?

I tried levering the balljoint to check for play but either I'm not trying hard enough or it's ok. Maybe I should check it again.

    Any thoughts?
    Cheers

    What are you complaining about?

OK, that's not a helpful thought, but jeez, it cost $2000, go spend some money on it!

Apart from that bitterness and envy, sorry, don't know enough mechanical stuff to help

I just spent $1600 on it in parts......

New Maxi Drive axles and flanges, full overhaul of swivel housings, new bushes on radius arms and panhard, new clutch master and slave, new brake master.......

I've fitted MD drag link and track rod, new steering dampener.....

Now.....what is the source of this infernal clunking!
    Cheers

If it is a good solid thump, the ball joint is the most likely, but look for other bits loose in the suspension, particularly the bolts through the bushes, allowing the metal central tube to move. Look at the bushes at the front of the A-frame as well. Helps to get underneath and have someone bounce the back up and down, but watch out for fingers etc.

Check the shock absorbers - loose mountings as well as worn bushes. The bottom of the rear shock absorbers is in my experience, a common problem. If fitted with a sway bar, and I think it should have been originally, check for play in the "tie rod end" on the short link, and also the other end of the link worn bushes (same as Series shocker bushes) or loose bolt.

I suppose the leveller could make a noise, but I have never struck it.

When trying for movement on bushes etc with a lever, try moving in opposite directions - the first way you try it may be up against the end of travel in that direction. Try violently rocking the vehicle back and forth by hand with the handbrak on to see if this reproduces the knock. If it does, you are halfway to finding it.

more than likely the aframe ball joint, but a totaly cactus self leveler can do it if its been hammered while its not been working. but like zook says, check everything else while your under there, if possable cross axle it on wheel ramps and check again.

On my '89 110 the ball joints in the leveler had worn out, I think they are adjustable, but I chucked the leveler and fitted non leveled springs. the rear was a bit stiffer, but still had good articulation and no more knocking!
    Removed the antiroll bar too.

When I used to fix things for a crust, the standard procedure was to 'return to standard', then follow the standard procedures

could be a loose or worn shock bush... they clunk, so much so, that when I ignored one some many years ago, the shock eventually broke the top mounting bolt...damn.....
