I don't know the answer to your question, but could you also idle the engine so you could steer and brake?

Steering a P38A when the engine has stopped is nigh impossible. I have had to do this several times!

if you put the auto in N, select N on the transfer case ensure that the CDL if fitted is unlocked you can flat tow it as far as you like, I would limit the speed tho as its a lot of metal to get pushy...

If you have to tow it due to a dead gearbox I would not have the engine running as your just going to hurt the gearbox some more... ummm hang on........ scratch that... (seriously dont do it)

Without the assist on the brakes your braking preformance (depending on leg strenght) will typically be under 1/3 of what your expecting and the steering defaults to the series powersteer system commonally called armstrong powersteering shoulders...

if your doing any real distance stop every 50ks and feel the hubs, diffs and tcase for heat levels.

If your seriously worried un couple the propshafts from the front and rear diff drive flange, rope the shafts up and then tow it, but bewarned, this means you have no handbrake.

I really recommend trailering it if you can but best of luck if you cant
