Tightening New Wheel Bearings

should be all good ron, reckon you would feel anything untoward if you jacked it up and spun the wheel. bearings are pretty hardy buggers

When doing wheel bearings the right way is to tighten slowly while turning the wheel until you can not turn the wheel, this of course does not mean put all your wieght on the spanner. Once you cant turn the wheel or becomes hard to turn back the nut off until the wheel turns freely. Then grab the tyre top to bottom and see if there is any movement. Do the same side to side. Just remember you could have movement in the suspension joints or steeing system. Dont confuse this with bearings being loose.

I thought all wheel bearings were taper bearings?????? Not that I have worked on to many Landies

you spin the wheel as you tighten them for 2 reasons

1. it stops the bearings from binding
2. it squeezes the grease out giving you the correct reload.

you do not want to know how much effort it would take to "tighten" the bearings to the point that they indent the races.
