    Tightening New Wheel Bearings

I was just reading an article by Roothy in an A4WDM article. He mentions spinning the hubs whilst tightening the wheel bearings to prevent the rollers leaving indentations in the race.

Is this true? I can't remember if I spun the hubs whilst torquing up the new wheel bearings on the Disco.

I hope I haven't stuffed the new bearings.

I don't know about denting the race, but I always rotate the hub to make sure everything has settled into place properly.

I know I rotated them to settle them but not if I did as I tightened them to 61Nm before backing them off 90 deg and retightening to 4Nm

I'm pretty sure I rotated them as I tightened initially them by hand with the tube spanner before I torqued them down.

Hmm, I hope they are alright. The car has done less than 100 km since they were fitted so I can retension them. It's more whether I have damaged them on install.

I haven't done the front bearings yet, just the rears. I don't know whether to do the fronts. The backs were converted to oil lubricated at the same time and were easy to do.

    Yep me too....

Torque them up??? Nah, just do them up tight & then back off 1/8th of a turn or so (if new, you want it slightly tighter than adjusting existing units).

pardon my ignorance but are they ball or taper roller on the rangey as you cant indent a ball by tightening but you can a taper? ( is this right)???

They are taper bearings - I was doing the Disco, not the Rangie.

ah right, i know when we used to press taper bearings onto truck gearbox shafts we allways used an old outer as any excess pressure allways put an imprint on the outer, never damaged the inner, dont know why. but this was using 100 ton electric press. doubt 60 odd nm would mark it though. reckon the bearing would stop spinning a fair bit before it imprinted ???

I used the correct tool to press in the race so the pressure was applied around the race, not via the bearings. The bearings were placed in afterwards.
