    V8 Disco 2 performance

Could everyone who has a V8 D2 please have a look at what compression
ratio is written on your engine. It is stamped onto the block just
    near the dipstick.

I have alway complained that I felt my Disco lacked power right from
brand new. What I did not know was that Landrover went and installed
a very few D2's with the low compression 4.0l engine. Most V8's will
be 9.35:1 and this is the compression stated in the owners manual. It
was pointed out to me very recently that mine engine has a 8.38:1
    compression ratio.

What is even more concerning is that part of the stamp which show the
compression has been ground out with some sort of tool like a die
grinder. You can only read the :38 but can't see the 8 or 9. I am
assuming the grinding is an accident but who knows.

I wonder if you have any standing against LRA for supplying engines
which are less than what is stated in the manual and on all the
specs. I would imagine not but it is still annoying because I would
imagine that much difference in compression would cause a big loss in
    power and torque.

It does explain why I can run standard unleaded without pinging.

I recall from somewhere, that the coppers use some sort of light ie, IR, Black, Fluorescent etc, or something that can actually "see" the indentations made by the original punching under the surface, even though there is nothing visible.
I'm sure someone here will know what I am on about.

AFAIK mid '01 on had high comp engines. XA and YA chassis numbers (early thor 4litres and 4.6 litres D2 in the USA) still ran the 8.38:1 engines. 1A VIN's were all high comp, including the p38A from '01.

This is from Tom at ULR parts in Melbourne 2 weeks ago, as I was enquiring about availability of hi or low comp short engines.

Hopefully someone knows more about these motors than I do. I had a quick look on the web and foound that the 4.0l V8 came out in a 8.13:1 and a 9.35:1 ratio. On my block it definately says CR ?.38:1 which doesnt not match anything.

Justin, so that means if mine is a low comp engine in an '04 Disco then something funny is going on????

Adam are u sure the numbers arent :35 & not mistakingly taken as a :38
The number stamping can sometimes be a pain to read..just a thought

The best thing is to ring a dealer! & see what the engine no. comes up on the LRA system . This way u can check to see if the number matches what LRA have. It wont tell u comp ratio but at least u will know its the right engine. U can then ask the dealer to find out from the UK what the CR is supposed to be!! In a few short months they ,may get back 2 u.

Been out for another look. There is no doubt it is .38, it is very easy to read. I am sure the engine numbers should match as I bought the car brand new from Landrover.

Have you heard of a ?.38 engine?
