EP rating is not required in gearboxes but is needed where there is a large amount of sliding action as in most crown wheel and pinions (which is why the original recommendation for engine oil is OK, and which is what it was designed for). Well designed gearboxes avoid extreme pressure situations. The transfer case in particular is not very fussy, but the ease of gearchanging in the main gearbox is greatly affected by the type of oil. I have ended up using synthetic engine oil to get around a problem getting out of first in cold weather startups. The critical factor is to avoid too heavy an oil as the oil pump willfail if asked to pump it cold.
If running a lot more power than it was designed for, lubrication will become more critical.
