    My first series LR

I've just picked up my first real Land Rover. It was sold to me as a Series III but its build date is 12/60 according to the plate, so I doubt that was correct.

It is a long wheel base fiited with a Holden 202.

Where do I find the VIN ?

The compliance plate by the radiator and the Leyland plate on the dash have the following numbers LBCAPIAF 510683.

Can anyone decode that for me please ?

The better place for decoding vin numbers is

    http://www.clifton.nl/index.html?calvin.html

it's called calVIN - and if you put in your vin number ( It actually should start with SAL, and the i is actually a 1)

you come out with a 2 door 4 spd LWB RHD 6cyl CKD (ie kit car assembled here) made between 79 and 87.

The build date is probably 12/ 80 - and you can find the complete chassis number ( which for LR was the complete vehicle ID number anyway) on the spring hanger for the front drivers side .

If the speedo is in front of the gear stick it's a series 11, if it's in front of the steering wheel it's a series 111.

    G'day Colmiller

The vehicle that you have just bought would be a Series 3 with a VIN number like that, as Leyland went to Vin No's in late 1979 for the 1980 year model, SAL stands for Leyland UK and the next L stands for Landrover, hence SALL??????????

If the firewall intrudes fairly well back into the cabin then chances are that it is was a 6 cylinder 2.6 litre overhead valve inlet/side valve exhaust (IOE) motor that was ditched for the Holden

    cheers
