    Engine saver low water alarm

Hi guys i just fitted the engine saver to my Defender i was checking the car out befor i ftted it and i had a brain storm to mount the probe on the thermostat housing

So i rang dave and he said it should be alright , now the reason i have done this is if the radiator ever has to come out you dont have to remove and refit the probe to the radiator

The end result was it works except it took ages for the light and alarm to go off , more like when the thermostat had opened it turned off , ill try it in the morning once the motor has cooled down then ill start it and go for a drive

According to David, this is a classic symptom of air in the system & it should be purged, or this will occur all the time. You may need to do this a few times.

It is also a bit dangeroos, as you don't know if the engine has dropped coolant while standing & thus can give you a misleading condition if you ignore it.

After purging a few times, I got my 'self test alarm' down to 2 seconds max.

Well its all good now took it for a drive a half hour ago and all good as soon as the ignition was turned on the engine saver did its pre check for a split second buzz light and went off drove around for a bit no dramas

And the previous post was more of a help if anyone was to fit one , to let them know they could mount the probe on the thermostat housing under the hose from the radiator

That is good rm. You may find this condition can alternate. One day it's bad & the next, is perfect. At least you know what it should do & if it varies much, then you know to have a look at the coolant or give it a purge one day.

    Cant get it done/Or wont

Guys, Im not a mechanic and wont ever fake it, but Ive asked 4 auto electricains to install low coolant alarms on my S1 and S11 Disco's and they find some excuse or reason not to do it,

Some replies are, What do you need it for seeing you get your cars regularly serviced
Oh Mate, bit risky, especially on those plastic expansion tanks

Been there done that, more trouble than its worth.

So where do we go, especially when the nearest Landie Specialist is 2.5 hours drive and I need both done.

    Please offer some help

    David,

I just fitted mine this morning in about an hour to my S1 TDi Discovery. I would have to say that it is quite simple to follow the directions. The only hassle I had was identifying the ignition wire to link into. I purchased the in hose model and just cut the hose and trimmed it. Found the correct position for the lights in the empty dash button.

I'm in no means a mechanic and whilst a little apprehensive at first the instructions are fairly comprehensive.

    Cheers

    Weird or wot?

What has service interval got to do with anything?

You could have something let go while the vehicle is standing overnight for instance. You drive off not knowing you are down in coolant, WHAMMO! Stuffed donk.

I would have thought that the known fault of the tank by the sparkies would have been good enough reason to install one.

Yeah its no hassle at all , im not a mechanic but im pretty handy with a spanner

Mine took no more than a hour to do and like coastie said the instructions are realy good and yes once you find a power wire from the ignition with a light tester or a multi meter its as simple as pie

And the engine saver i got was a probe type not a in line type where you have to cut the hose

Id try it if you get in trouble dave said to me he will always answer your calls , or you could post on here if you got in strife and some one will help you out

I would see these responses as I don't want to fit it for you or I don't care about you vehicle or business. If it saves you once then it's worth the money and hassle.

I fitted the expanison tank sensor in my Defender. It was very easy but I did put mine a little to high so it is easy to set it off.
I was a little concerned about drilling the hole but found once I decided to just do it there was no dramas.
