Jeff there is a landy mechanic who lives in cowaranup, but also works up at the mines fly in fly out etc. I just cant remember his name. He used to work at purcell autos/british parts and service centre. I know this as one of the other mechanics at those places was out of work for a while and was going down to help him as he was inundated with work.
He now also is up at telfer mine. He also was the support mechanic for the variety bashes through ARB ossie park.
I will see if I can find a name.
I too last week saw a td5 do exactly what yours did with the motor getting faster and faster with the key out and the batt disconnected. It was also stalled to stop it, lucky it was manual.
The cause was a faulty o ring on a injector that had let diesel fill up the sump....very scary.

Any diesel can do it. Used to work with a guy who's Yota did it. It was starved of air to stop it being auto. Unfortunatly he didn't know that trick it was a passer by who did so the damage was already done before it was stopped.

Is that the one with the 35s ?

No Ken not the dual cab, my work car, Td5 130 extra cab, only
on 33's.

Talking to a guy today about an auto doing the run on & as
bradtot said you need to block the air in take with a rag or
something & cut the air supply to stall it.
I'm thinking of going back to a V8 at least I know these motors
better, & put it on LPG. The old diesels are getting to techical..
Would like to do a disco ute like the guy on this site did
except V8...

My '03 TD5 D2 has a throttle valve (ILT) that was part of the exhaust gas recirculation system. I have installed a kill switch that supplies 12v directly from the battery (via a fuse) to the modulator. So if mine starts revving by itself I can just hit the button to close-off the inlet air. I have tested that it works too!

Its works as an anti-theft device too. I switch it on whilst parked in shopping area carparks so that if someone gets hold of my keys the engine will stall as soon as its started.

My home-grown engine monitor will also shut the valve if the engine looses oil pressure.

More so with turbo diesels...
Mate of mine works with forest machinery, and had a 1200HP turbo diesel motor self destruct this way...
- oil seals failed in the turbo, spraying oil into intake, was nothing big enough to starve the air intake!!
One big (expensive) grenade :o

Thanks for the replies. Graeme your set up sounds the go. Until I get around to a set up like that, if mine goes I surpose I will have to jump out of the car and rip my shirt off and try and cover the snorkel. Hope this will work before any terminal damage is done.:(

Just think anyone with a Auto TD what a ***** fight it would be to find yourself in this sort of situation.:mad:

Just imagine the people out there that would have no idea what to do if this happened.:eek:

emergancy shut down of the td5 can be effected in a handfull of ways...

If you have a snorkle, rip the head off and put the floor mat on it.

rip the pickup hose off the inlet side of the airbox and do same

rip the intercooler hose off, (knife it)
