    Winch options on Tdi Defender?

Just wondering if anyone has any data on the size/type of winch I can fit to an OEM Land Rover Bull Bar on a Tdi Defender.

After a very serious (5 hour) recovery last night (I earned another Toyota Rescue badge ) I've realised I'm definitely going to have to strip and rebuild the winch that's on the vehicle. I'm also now convinced its only an M8000 but can't tell with out removing it from the vehicle (as I can't see the plate on the winch with the model no).

Anyway I'm thinking that once I get the winch out I might rebuild, sell it and get a nice shiny new one.

I know, given the winch that's in it, I can fit an XD9000 with out modifying anything and I suspect I can even fit Warn 9.5XP. Don't know what I'd need to do to fit a 9.5ti or XD9000i style winch.

Can anyone offer some advice or options?

Pretty sure when I bought my Tdi (98) that I was told the 'genuine' LandRover winch bar could only accept the 8000lb winch. The ARB would accept either the 8000 or 10000lb.

So I modified mine (AR to take the hi-mount that I got for free

    winch to suit defender

we've got a 98 Defender with a warn 9.5 xp. ARB Defender winch bars of around that era need to be modified, an easy job with an angle grinder and a finish off with a die grinder to fit the longer winch I also added a couple of stiffening plates just in case welded alongside the jacking box section. I needed to add a few more packers to bring the winch out a bit further again to accommodate the longer winch
sorry can't show photo's of it a that bar no longer exists due to hitting a cow.
however all the new ARB bars are made to fit the complete range of warn winches the same modifications that I made but without the plates I added

Why do you need a welder and grinder to fit a High mount into a Defender ARB bumper.

You just need some Ali or steel spacers and V8 head bolts. Put the spacer in between the winch and front bar. Use the V8 head bolts (same thread as the warn but longer) and bolt it up. Then you don't need to cut out the middle bar
This is what i did in the UK.and this was on challenge truck , so the winch got really used

Well thats why you put in the spacer block. This has to be 75mm (from memory) and then this goes between the front of the bar (where it bolts on ) and the front of the winch. Then the V8 head bolts go though the front holes and the spacer and into the front of the high mount. This spacer moves the winch back enough to fit it in behind the bar.

This is a pic of my brother one which has the A/c ARB bumper bar. mmm this was the only pic i could find of his front end and it was the day he dropped the car from 40 foot onto its roof

I'm thinking that I've got too many options. What ever I do the first things going to involve a lot of measuring. It looks like the OEM bar is just that little bit different to an ARB one.

    Re OEM Bullbar on TDi

There was me thinking that the OEM Land Rover Bull Bar was not suited for Winches. I have read in many posts, dont'know where, dont know when but I now I will see them again, that they need to be replaced with a more suitable ARB or TJM. I was going to shell out good money for a suitable one but now might not need to.

Would like to know others views on this without hijacking the post.

PS this is my first correspondence on this forum so go easy.

OEM Bull Bar (was going to replace at some stage)
