    Thumbs down Smelly Jerry cans

I have some willow jerry cans. We used them on our first trip with diesel in them and they didn't smell even a little bit inside the car.

I loaned them to a friend who used them for petrol, and clearly they got generally covered in the stuff Anyway, I've washed them with soap and water, but they still smell! I've put diesel in them, but the car still smells of petrol when they are left in the car. Clearly it's the exterior of them that smells.

Has anyone got and good recipes for removing the smell from them? My only plan at the moment is to take them down and cover them in metho (with a splash of amonia).

    Any suggestions?

maybe degrease them first, or take them to car lovers and hit them with the engine/tyre cleaner and then the warm soapy wash. Matt

Leave them outside, sun, rain and wind will do the job in 3-4 days, Done it before, worked for my nose

And don't forget about rubber gusket, that is where the smell house.

Soap or whatever can't remove petrol smell. Example: wash your hand with petrol, than soap (or any chemical) and petrol smell still on hands.

    Cheers,

will you be lending them out again......?

just wash them with soapy water and leave them in the sun.......
the sun will evaporate any traces of petrol once the jerry gets hot enough.....

Yep, I think this is the best plan.

However I did leave them out for a couple of weeks outside. They weren't directly in the sun though.

I hit them again with degreaser and I think they are better now. Hopefully it will be ok
