Buy one. Simple as that we just finished a 7000km trip Darwin - Port Lincoln - Adelaide and the usual tourist stuff. Even my 19 year old daughter watched it, but it was a god send for my partners 8 year old.

As with many of the comments they are only used to stop the kids going troppo, otherwise eye spy, what am I, etc. BUT that takes a bit of effort when I just want to drive and concentrate on that, so yes I have no problems with one.

We did Sydney - Adelaide recently with my big trailer and my son was kept amused with a Play Station Portable. He had books, toy cars etc and I would tell stories about how grandad single handedly won World War Two or how I would beat everyone in our race in Adelaide/how I should have beaten everyone. I can't stand I spy. We tried to make Hay plain interesting stopping to take photos of plants or animals. When we have both kids they fight so much that any distraction is worthwhile, but you can't rely on just one thing.

My two cents worth is to buy the ones from Woolworths. We brought two which have batteries for the price that JB wanted for one and wouldn't you know it there the same except for the brand and no battery.

We wait till the near lunch restlessness and wack them on they both could have there own choice and mum could load them and hand them to eack kid.

I would have to say the 4 year old would only watch it for about 20 - 30 minutes but thats all you need to stop the winging. He would be back to playing with toys and watching out the window.

The other real benifit was they could watch them anywhere big plus at night time. Again its only a half hour of freedom for the parents but worth every cent.

I have used both the overhead (came with the vehicle) and the strap on the front seat portable. I have two kids 8 and 11 and it was the best thing I have added to my transport. I set some time limits in their use, like when going through some interesting country/landmarks but the novelty wore off quickly and now only watch them occasionally. I buy 2-3 cheap DVDs or hire cheap weeklies. The portables have rechargeable NiCad batteries and last a couple of hours but use of the rear accessorie plug burnt the fuse! Obviously they have 1 each and at about $150 each (includes headphones, case ac/dc charger) and they play every type of DVD (the overhead only plays genuines) it was a bargain for the peace and harmony emanating from the back seat.
