Thread: running cold??

Sorry to hijack, I bunged a new thermostat in my 300TDi as well, and it will nopt warm up unless it's driven. Once it's been for a run it keeps at op temp no dramas. Doesn't get hot at all, no matter what I'm doing to it. But I reckon I could leave it for hours idling from cold start and it would not warm up. Wierd due to being a new thermostat.......

Any thoughts?

Have you checked the thermo fan/viscous fan - it's been a bit chilly recently and if your thermo/viscous fan is running flat chat then it would struggle to warm up.

In this weather the fan should just be slightly rotating especially on initial start.

yeah i keep the fan low until it warms up........eventually. the viscus fan would make a nasty noise + wouldnt come into play unitl the thermo was open

Ditto for me. But it was the same in the middle of summer.

Pizzed my Thermostat off..dont get cold enough here to need it..one less thing to go wrong now

That's not really a good move.

The thermostat not only controls the temperature of the engine but it acts as a restrictor. Without it fitted, the cool water might not reach the back of the motor as it can wizz through the front too easily. As a result, the back of the motor can run hot without you realising it.

My TDI200 runs pretty cold, and takes for ever to heat up to the thermo temp (just replaced it with an 88degC one. Is this normal for these engines?

It is normal for the engine to take ages to get to operating temperature.
So much so that the 200tdi had a heated windscreen fitted to aid defrosting/demisting because the engine took so long to heat up.

Tis alright scouse, Rich (KIE4) gave me a plug (with small hole)to put in the housing which causes that restriction you mentioned...
