molybdenum, thats not spelt right but near enough

Its a high temp grease with excelent impact resistance and water tolerance.

If you look at it close enough with a microscope the individual "particals" of grease have a sort of "magnetic" property which means it likes to stay together.

ITs not known as gotcha grease for nothing.

Although its not very salt tolerant.

for what purpose? 1 type of greese WONT do all applications.
the black moly greese is better suited to tie rod ends and slip joints.
and a lithium based grease is better suited for wheel bearings and uni joints.

Actually that IS spelled right! (spelt is a variety of wheat and while it is an acceptable spelling for the past tense and past participle of spell, I prefer to reserve spelt for the plant)

Grease type? I use molybdenum disulphide grease for general purposes for the reasons you say, wheel bearing grease for wheel bearings, rubber grease for brake and clutch hydraulics, "whatever I got at the clearing sale" for ploughs, trailer couplings and other machinery.

Castrol LMM is excellent for general chassi lubing, splines, ball joints, uni's, etc.
It's a Lithium complex soap base with 3% MoS2 (easier than spelling Molybdenum diSulphide )

me thinks a grease lesson is in order, when I get time

MoS2 is a small constituent of a grease, generally in the 3-5% range, any more doesn't help. It can be used with any heavy oil and thickener, e.g. the Castrol example above, or for more severe applications, (eg salt and water tolerance) a Calcium Sulphonate thickener, as Caterpillar use in their heavy off road machinery grease. This is an extremely salt tolerant grease.

In a very brief synopsis, the molybdenum diSulphide comes into play when the oil boundary layer lubrication breaks down. Under high pressure and load, the moly platelets shear and adhere to metal, plating the surface.

MoS2 doesn't like very high temps/speeds and isn't recommended for disc brake wheel bearings, although soluble moly (a different form, generally used in engine oils) is fine in this application and Redline use it in their CV2 racing wheel bearing grease at 0.9%.

BTW, we always called Castrol LMM "Christmas grease" as it took till friggin christmas to get it off you !

So, is Castrols LMM to be used for Uni joints and drive shaft lubrication?

Unfortunately, I dont have a manual with lubricants to be used for my RRC

Moreys HT purple grease. I reckon best around for bearings ect. Temp range of -40 to +200C. Wont wash out with water exceeds Timken test ect
    Little story
A friend owns a bearing company and where selling about 20-40 bearings a month to a mining company for a conveyer belt. He then told them to use Moreys, since then they now buy 2 to 4 a month.
