Well I've just had the phone call..
Good news. Just a seized bearing in the tensioner. That's what threw the belt. It's apparently running fine, not pressurising the cooling system, so head gasket would appear to be ok.
As breakdowns go, I got off lightly this time it would seem!

The bearing had locked solid. I'm guessing something to do with an accumulation of dirt & crap in recent months, them getting in somehow with the rain.

Just purchased said belt from Land Ranger Spares. Adelaide.
DAYCO 7PK2250
7 = ribs.
PK= type of belt
2250 = length in mm.
Cost. $59
Seems the original belt (LR Genuine Parts) 7PK2255 is not available & therefore the new belt is 5mm shorter, so not a bad thing.
**** New Genuine Parts price for 2250 was told, $79.
$20 for a pretty box? I don't think so.
I think I have been through more belts on my 300TDi than I have had hot breakfasts!
I am positive it is due to dry beach sand being thrown around under the bonnet as it only tends to rear its ugly head after a trip up to Teewah and Fraser Island beaches.The sand is really abrasive.
If I spend time on dirt track, no problems.
After every beach trip, the ribs start to tear off the belt, so replacement is the safest option.($50 bucks a belt)
And yes - do it a few times and you can get it on with your eyes closed! - Matti
p.s Bearings from LR for idler wheels and air compressor pulley - cost = forget it.they only sell the complete pully/idler
Local bearing supplier -= small ones $4.50 plus GST - air con pulley $35 + and a couple of easy hours work pressing in new bearings. - no more hum and rattle.:)
I cannot remember the sizes so this will be hard to explain but here goes. LR list 2 different size belts according to a serial break in the engine number.Quote:
