That's the frustrating part.. the service was the day before. Hadn't clocked 50 kms since picking it up.

The brief was 100,000 service , plus checkover for an upcoming desert trip. And I got 48 kms.

It could have been worse I know, but that's not much consolation.

another good reason to fit an alarm, sometimes when driving in busy traffic conditions you are to busy with eyes on road and it doesn,t take long for engine to get hot,when I used to work for a road repair company we would fit an alarm and a big red light as it was'nt always easy for the driver to watch gauges when road marking or spraying etc.

A tip, when buying a spare belt, print out the page from Rave on how the belt runs on the pulleys and stick it with the spare belt. Then when out bush and you need to replace there is a quick reference.

(After you've taken the belt off a couple of times you tend to do it blindfolded after that.)

Was it serviced at LR or a local guy?I would ask some questions,what would have happened if you were on your trip.I would seriously look at any damaged caused by it boiling aswell.If it got to the red on your gauge the head is in trouble. Pat

One of the major LR specialists. Questions will be asked.

Yes I think its going to be expensive. It was the miss that developed that first alerted me to something being seriously wrong, you don't see steam in the rain..

According to RAVE, the belt is supposed to last 160,000km before changing! My first one was done at about 40,000km and at 100,000km I think I'm still on the second.

BTW, does anybody have the RAVE pg number for the belt layout? I couldn't find it at all, even the belt removal section was under charging or similar.

I bought one from Repco for my disco and it didnt like it for some reason, I think the grooves didnt line up with the pulleys as it kept riding off so I went and spent $43 on a LR belt (that I was surprised about as the Repco one was $52) and found that that rode off as well so then replaced the tensioner and tried the repco one again as the LR one ended up stuffed and still riding off.

Replaced all the bearings in all the tensioners and replaced the water pump and then fitted repco belt again and still came off.

Cracked it one day when the repco one got caught in the aircon belt and stuffed the pair of them right outside my mates workshop so fitted another from bursons and still the same thing and Jamie grabbed a LR one off the shelf and no problem since.

If it works fine but they dont work on mine for some strange reason.

Sorry to hear about that Tusker, hope it isnt too serious and all is rectified quickly.

Just a tip always mark which way the old belt ran before you take it off as if you want to use it again it can shorten its life big time running it the opposite way.

Is it possible that the rattle is a dead tensioner, as the belts don't usually just let go? One can only hope, although if it is the tensioner then the replacement belt would also come off fairly quickly.
