Defender roll cage

For an external cage, whats the law say regarding protruding beyond the body?

BTW,
Not roll cages, but in the UK mags you see advertised square cross section bars which are mounted to the sides of the defender body - really handy when you lean into that tree:o or deep rut.

I searched through the old threads and the most common thing talked about was mounting the cage...Design and Fabrication is no problem its the mounting that has me worried...Plated to to the floor or mounted somehow back to the chassis...

take a look on the safety devices webpage (link below)... you can see the through body mounts which tie back to the chassis. there are many designs - for me I intend at some stage to go for an inside/outside cage with a removable cross brace for onroad use.

NO WAY. That would be great for a drive up to TM, O'Reillys, Binna Burra.

Wazza, that's a great looking landy.

Tell us how you did it. Eg did you pay someone, if so how much. Problems, what would you do different? Can you fit the roof back on or is it a thing of the past?

custom off road in Brisbane did the work

There is a full exo skeletons that goes on the outside of the soft top that has a boat rack on it as well so thats the only real roof rack that goes on.

(sorry no pictures of that and it takes 3 hours to get back on so no i am not going to do it just yet)

It has slightly higher head room in that a standard hard top which is good .



I dont think i would change it if i had to do another one except maybe a bar from the windscreen to the main bar as there is nothing for the passenger to hold onto

I would be plating to the body for the simple reason that if the chassis bends it will bend the frame and that could be bad. If you build the roll cage into the body work and substantially mount it up if the chassis bends the cage will still be intact relevant to the body.

As all the big nasty bits are attached to the chassis Id rather have the chassis seperate away from the cab/cage than have them still attached when something was going west


The perentine ones only mount up to the bodywork (which is re-enforced) and they can wistand a hell of a pounding.
