Angry Bloody Trasfer case stuck in Diff Lock again !

    HI All,
Im really getting ****ed re our transfer case getting stuck in diff lock.....Ive reversed hundreds of meters turning from left to right, cleaning the linkages under the Disco, but still cant get into all wheel drive high range......can anybody give us any other ideas what to try please?

Im getting to the stage where I might just sell the bloody thing !

The TC oil is almost due to be replaced, maybe I might try that first.....

is it stuck in low range or is it just centre diff stuck ie: all teh way to teh left??? if its stuck in low range may be oil or linkage sticking if it's just the centre stuck mine on occasions has done that all i do is tap with a little bit of force to get it to move (not brute force tho) and then it shifts fine it's like its getting back at me for lack of use

Try putting a jack under the front diff and jacking just high enough so the right front wheel is off the ground this sometimes takes enough pressure off the drive-train for the diff lock to be disengaged. If this doesn't work you probably have a more mechanical problem with the diff lock.

Always take care when you put a jack under the car. Safety first.

Sorry forgot to mention once wheel is in the air try spinning the wheel this might help the diff lock disengage. With the car turned off of-course.

Steering on full lock and drive it up an incline, once there give the stick a try.

    Oldie but a goodie.

    Cheers

ok, thanks blokes, will give it a try again now Ive cooled down a tad.....

    Yes maggot

Once/if I get it out of diff lock I might try a heap of degreaser on the linkages and hose of then maybe some spray on grease.........

Truth be known before I bought our Disco i dought it would have ever been in diff Lock, but I notice that when on a run with the club its no effort at all to shift to wherer ever we need......so lack of use may be the prob, I dont really want to start pulling stuff apart..

As I understand this, you cant move the lever over to the right (unlocked side).

That sounds like it is a problem with the linkage between the lever and the t/case.

In earlier years the linkage used was quite reasonable, but rover seem determined to endear owners with problems to test their loyalty. So they re-designed it and produced a piece of cr&p.

If the linkage is not spot on, it either binds, or has too much lost motion. The adjustment is crucial because of the eccentric design/forces at the pivot points and the small pivot pins with pi$$y plastic bushes. I doubt they would tolerate worn/damaged bushes.

My guess is that the linkages needs some TLC and possibly need new pivot bushes.

Chin up mate, I don't know how long you've had yours but mine was exactly the same when I got it. In fact on the test drive from the yard I found a big paddock with loose gravel to check CVs etc and then could not for the life of me get it to unlock. 20min of twirling, reversing, wheelspin, every trick in the book.
It was just all seized up at the linkages and freed up after some use.
I took it's previous lack of use in a positive light
Spray grease is sticky & would tend to collect dust, I'm a lanolin user myself... mmmm lamb chops..
