Also, here's a long range tank I did for my previous Rangie - the difference is, umm, obvious. The rust appearing on the shiny bit occurred a short time after washing the molasses off - it was so clean. The tank was inverted and put back into the drum to do the other end. I did the inside of the tank as well.

What were you doing on Norfolk Island? Working on the railways?

I would agree with using molasses as well. I had a mate who used to restore steam engines and old tractors and he had large drums of the stuff with rusted parts in them all around the back yard.

I was the manager of the OTC Submarine Cable Station at Anson Bay. It was part of the ANZCAN Cable System (Australia-New Zealand-Canada)

It works a treat but just remember to check your parts as too long in the mixture and they will dissolve ! Ask my dad how he lost some of his 1927 dodge parts !

I've left steel parts in for quite a long time with no ill effects. Pot metal, etc, is a different kettle of fish.
