Holden engine and gearbox into Disco

Has anyone fitted a 4L80E four speed auto box and a L1 or L2 engine into a disco or rangie? if so how hard/expensive? was it worth the effort etc?

My engine is very tired and the ZF just spat the dummy so I am looking at the cost of a new ZF and 4.6 to the above?

The cost is not in the motor & box, its in the adaptors to the TC and all the other crap that just adds up.

Those boxes and motors are getting cheap now, and the produce some good power. Would be a fun conversion.

Try searching on other forums to give you an idea of whats involved, it can get complicated especially with these computers.

    Cheers
    Dave.

Yeah that was why I thought I would ask? the adapter from Marks Adapters is about a grand, its all the other stuff that I have no idea about that I need help with.

While I'm at it is there a stronger transfer case than gthe disco one?

Problem is, these engines produce their power, read torque, at a different level to the original, L/R engines are low compression, produce good power thru the rev range, are light and cheap to rebuild, you will find that the engines you are looking at will require all of the sensors, which will probably need the ABS setup as the G/box and engine computer usually take their road speed sensing from these, by the time you buy adaptors and mounts and the computers and sensors, as well as the motor and g/box, you will find it cheaper and easier to rebuild your present setup, Regards Frank.

Yet an LS1 will produse more torque at the lower revs than the rover, and a crudload more horsepower, will return BETTER fuel consumption

There is no difference generally in the costs of rebuilds between most motors, you will require all sensors and the wiring harness for the motor and gearbox, you will NOT need anything to do with the ABS, all speed signal is sourced via a speed sensor, you will simply need to buy an adaptor that plugs in where your speedo goes into the transfer

You will find it cheaper and easier to rebuild your current setup, but the gains from a conversion far outweight the ease factor

LS1 wiring looms are a pieces of pizz, you only interface half a dozen wires, stick in 4 relays and your done

Stick with the LT230, its the best bit in the disco driveline

I'm kicking myself I didn't do the gen3, I'm still thinking of selling my whole driveline and the blower and setting one up, I'll make the horsepower and more torque easy with the blown 351, but with an LS1 you get fuel economy to

Hey Rovercare is the L1 an all alloy engine? Just that I'm happy with the suspension set up I have?

TA muchly now I will have a hunt and see what the price difference is. I like the idea of cheaper parts once it is fitted, so if it is a bit more expensive I think that will pay for it self over time.

    cheers Blythe

    P.S. have you done this?

Where do you buy these adaptors and how much are they? - the last time I checked on such things they were nearly $1000 ea and only available from the US.

I have an analogue speedo in my jag but a getrag gearbox that does not have a speedo drive so I need to change the digital signal from the hall effect pick up to a rotational motion to drive an old speedo.

    Thanks

not that hard to set up.

    I run a HSV 215 ex VT/VS (stroked 308)
has huge amounts of torque at low revs.

Marks sell the adaptors. unles you want to use holden gearbox.

use the zf rebuild with upgraded parts.

    senors are ok.
    speed sensor plenty options available.
you wil have to modify the ecu to ignor some inputs that are required.

    Michael.
