Many years ago, I had a uni fail in a holden while heading down the F3. The tailshaft bent like a banana and the bend hit the underside of the floor and unable to rotate further, broke the gearbox case and bell housing. The gearbox and tailshaft had to be recovered from the middle of the lane.

Another time a uni failed on the rangie while on a reasonably difficult climb. The front of the rear tailshaft dug in and half ripped the mounting for the A-frame ball joint the the diff housing.

The Land Rover specific Tom Wood Shafts look awesome - and so does the price compared to anything here.

How big are the 1310 unis compared to the stock ones???

I've never broken a uni, but it is something I've always wondered about - especially when working on a Nissan shaft - they put the rover shafts to shame. They difference is absolutely massive.

If these are a bigger join and beefier shaft, they look to be a great option.

Dave, I've got some pics of the Tom Woods and stock shafts. AFAIK, the 1310 that Tom uses is similar, if not the same size as that used in the Patrols etc.

i dont understand what all the fuss is about........?

are the unis on a double cardan shaft harder to replace.....?
or is it just one more to do.......?

unis arent too hard to replace........pretty much all you need is a hammer...a vice.....and a socket........

    or there something im missing........?

They're certainly trickier. There's a ball joint in the centre that has needle rollers inside that can easily be disturbed and the 2 unis have to be assembled at the same time. It takes a bit of juggling. Often there is a damaged yoke or 2 that makes it beyond just replacing the unis.

You wouldn't get the rear shaft made up with a double cardan joint on one end, would you?
