Pull the fuel tank drain (just long enough to drain a cupful or so of diesel) and see how clean the bottom of the tank is.
Here's what I've now done:
* checked lift pump screws - TIGHT
* drained sedimentor and cleaned it - brown goop lined the glass wall. yuck
* tried to drain fuel tank - bung stuck tight. half a tank of fuel still in there, but treated with biocide.
* now when trying to prime, air squeeks out of Vent on CAV filter (see pic), but sedimentor does not fill.
Perhaps I should get a petrol...this shouldn't be so difficult!
If I cant' get it going on the weekend, Land Vehicle Spares should have room for it during the week.

Have you checked your tank vents &/or fuel cap ?
If you have an air compressor handy, it might be an idea to pressurise the tank with a SLIGHT pressure - 15psi or so, then you can check for leaks to see where the problem is.
It may be that your fuel pump has died - either the valves or diaphragm. Might be an idea to pull it off and inspect.
When you bleed the system, are you just bleeding the top of the CAV filter, or do you bleed the pump as well?
Also - did you replace the small o-ring on top of the CAV filter (it goes on the small bolt in front of the one your arrow points to).

Nope, no air compressor handy! :(
When I bleed the system, I do all 3 points - one on the CAV filter and two either side of the pump.
And when I did the filters, I did replace all the seals inside - two big ones and one little tiny one that sits inside.
Earlier today I drained the sedimentor and brown goop covered the inside of it. I cleaned it and put it back together, now when I prime, air squeaks out of the top of the CAV filter and the sedimentor does not fill. (it's still very empty). I haven't bothered to vent the other points yet, until I can get the sedimentor to fill!
Going to try tomorrow to get the bung out of the fuel tank and see what comes out. It's stuck rather tightly, however...
if youve had diesel snot im willing to bet that its bocking the valves in the lift pump and maybey the bypass priming valve on the regulator pump on the bottom of the fuel injector...
take the mechanical pump out of the equation temporarily by installing an electric lift pump and see what happens then. if that gives you no joy syphon out the tank and add in known good diesel and 500ml of metho through the fuel sender plate and stir it up really well...(wyns diesel fuel treatment will also work)
let the electrical pump swirl that around the system for a bit then bleed it and see what happens...
if you get it to start see if its temperature related or not if it slowly looses power then stops (only takes a minute or so) I dont have any news that is going to be cheap for you.

You say you can see the diesel swishing around in the filter? this suggests to me you may be getting some air in the suction -- also if you had bug in the filter you will certainly have it in the tank. I suggest you start from scratch... empty and clean tank and filters filter and treat fuel or new fuel check all joints and lines (check plastic lines for cracks-- and plastic filters)
you may as well do it as any good mechanic will and charge accordingly.

Just to add a little more re the bug
I have got handfulls of bug sludge out of fuel tanks so it may not be sufficient to just siphon the tank , I would drop it out and fully flush it!

save the effort of dropping it, remove the sender add a heap of metho, stir it up well and then add water then syphon that off.
flush with water and the leftover should float out first then drain and vent the tank with a pump to evaporate out the last of the water and you should be sweet.
more than once ive been bitten by removing the tank then haveing to rebuild the supporting lip as removing the bolts has torn it up where some nibbler forgot to put washers in and everything has corroded together, although in and of itself this alone is a good enough reason to drop the tank....
As above - but unless you already have an electric lift pump handy I would just dismantle clean and check (diaphragm and valves) on the mechanical pump, rather than spend the $$$.Quote:
