    TD5 misfiring

When accelerating up an incline with my caravan in tow, my TD5 misfires.
This also happens when accelerating thru the gears under load.
If it were petrol I would suspect points or plugs.

What could the problem be with the TD5

    Hi Loopy111,
Not sure about the Td5, but when this happened to my 200Tdi it turned out to be that the keyway was "chewing out" on the crankshaft pulley.

As my partner had to get back to Sydney, I decided to nurse it back from Broken Hill. BIG mistake.

    Check your timing!

Check the injector/ECU harness for oil contamination.
An intermittent misfire is the classic symptom.

Disconnect the ECU connector near the battery & see what you find.

    oil in th harness?

Look at the ecu plug and injector harness plug for oil. Run a search on this forum there's heaps of info.

Or... turbo outlet pipe collapsing internally. They de-laminate internaly and a flap will block the airflow. Undo the hose clamp and have a look.

I would suspect these over anything else.

And they are the least expensive!

What could the problem be with the TD5
There are several possible causes for this:

    1. Oil in the injector harness, which will work its way through to the ECU if the seals are crook. It is more common on early TD5's (1999 to 2002), but also possible on later units. The plug near the front of the rocker cover will be wet with oil. It usually requires a replacement harness and seals, or if you are keen, a clean out with solvent and new seals.

    2. You could have a throttle potentiometer problem, either with the wiring connection, or the pedal assembly itself. If this gets bad enough, the engine warning light will come on and there will be no throttle control, with the engine staying at idle. When this happened to me (fortunately under warranty), I was able to regain throttle control by turning off and re-starting.I then booked it in quick, so I would not get stranded.

It usually starts off intermittently, so that you've got time to have it seen to. It feels exactly like a petrol engine with crook plug leads.

If there is no oil in the harness, this is a likely culprit.

    3. If the car is a few years old, your turbo to intercooler pipes could be soft and/or delaminated. This is usually accompanied by black smoke from the exhaust under acceleration.

    4. A blocked fuel filter, but this is not usually so much mis-firing, as a general reluctance to accelerate.

    5. A stuck waste-gate valve can also be a cause of apparent mis-firing.

    Cheers,

    Lionel

Found this on another forum. Might be worth checking:

    Td5 Not Starting/Intermittent Cut-Out

Recently I ran into a problem with my 2001 Defender 90 Td5 not starting and intermittently dying on me on the highway.

I sent the car to the dealer 4 times and first 3 times they were clueless. The 4th time they replaced the ECU wiring harness because they feared it was the oil in the ECU problem. Thankfully the car was still under warranty. But 2 months after that was done (car is now out of warranty) it died on me again. I posted in the Land Rover Addicts Forum my problem and amazingly it turned out to be the relays under my passenger seat were just loose! Apparently they are saying this is a common problem so I thought it might be useful to others to include it in the KB.

    Hi,
Have a look at my TD5 Strange problem that came back posted today 9th August. You may have a faulty MAF unit.
