    Smile TD5 Exhaust changes

Guys.. I know its been discussed and several people have asked me...

So heres some pics of the Vortex muffler fitted to Lara..

What a Vortex looks like inside.

I went with the Shiny 3 inch Stainless Version in 25" long...

And heres the Big Shiny Muffler after a few months living under Lara!

    Thats it!

Other than 3" from the Turbo flange to the back of the vehicle thats the only muffler... Its amazingly civilised!

And yes, I got my economy back! Gained 2l/100km back over the straight through pipework.

Hi Mike, did you keep or put back the rear muffler or is it straight through from the Vortex.

    Baz.
    Cheers Baz.

I just removed center muffler.Had an annoying rattle from that area and thought(hoped) it was a loose baffle in muffler. It still has rattle, and disco sounds a bit ropy without muffler.
How much is a vortex muffler.?

Why do you think you lost economy with a straight through system?

I've spoken to a few industry guys about this, and the straight pipe theory too.

The general concensus is that even Turbo Diesels need some back pressure to control flow.

The Vortex provides a small resistance at lower revs and then scavenges at higher rpm to get the gases out.

    Certainly did the trick.

Just after fitting it I towed a Car Trailer to Warrnambool and back with a Vitara Estate on it.

Got better economy than I had previously without the load on the back...

Running since has increased my range 80-100km per tank.

Their online shop isnt showing the 3" version at the moment for some reason...

    Perhaps drop them an email..

(I have no affiliation with Vortex, just satisfied!)

That's interesting. I can't say I've noticed any drop in fuel economy in mine since I got the straight through system. I still have the final 'pod' muffler so perhaps that keeps up a little back pressure.

Also - it is a 130 so the whole exhaust pipe is a bit longer which may give a bit more backpressure than a 90/110

apart from looking more professional and being quieter, what is the advantage of using a (presumably) expensive vortex set-up versus just replacing the muffler with pipe and retaining the resonator at the rear? Genuine question, as I'm currently considering my options (as well as talking to Tombraider about an upgraded chip...once I get the oil in look problem sorted...)
