    Build up a Rangie proposal

    G'day All

I'm interestd in building up an RR and re powering it with a diesel. I know that JC has a RR with a diesel in it and have come to the conclusion that it would be the best of both worlds.

Given I know nothing about RR's can someone suggest what model RR (one thats still presentable but not going to cost heaps) and what combination of engine, gearbox and diffs are most suitable for this sort of thing?

I think JC used a 4BD whatever for his and now I own a house with a big shed I'd like to think seriously about this. I'll probably sell my bike soon and this will be the next project.

    Cheers,

Exactly what do you want to do with it. this will help with your diesel decision. I have an Isuzu 4BD1T in mine, rock crawler gears and 4:1 diffs, but I built it for very hard core rock climbing, wombat holes etc. very low speed high torque areas.

Have a think maybe a 300TDI would be good if more touring is required???

Ford Transit diesel could be the go now you can buy the bellhousing etc.

    The choices are many.

300 Tdi, R380 gearbox, standard diffs (pref 24 spline). Get the fuel pump optimized and you are laughing.

Sounds good John, What Gearbox would the Tdi 300 Cab Chassis have in it do you think?

It would have an R380. Won't fit in a Rangie though, I believe. You would need Discovery running gear (engine is the same).

Is there a difference between the 380's or are the bell housings differant

I think the input shafts are different lengths and shifters in different locations. There are other forumites who will know for sure.

If you go the 300Tdi route (R380's do fit) - then be prepared for touring at around 90-95km/hr if towing into a head wind.
