Just spoke to the L/R man in Adelaide and he mentioned it will most likely need a new sensor for one of the wheels $250 plus $150 to fit is that around the money can anyone tell me??
Hi All,
I am have the usual problem with my 99 Td5 Disco in regards to the ETC/ABS/HDC lights coming on. I went to a local landy specialist initially and the fault come up as a faulty sensor so they tapped the sensor on the head, cleared the faults, right as rain for about 20 minutes then the lights cam back on. Didnt even get out of the driveway of the landy guy. Took it back and they swapped the abs sensor for a second hand one. Fixed the problem for a bout a day and a half and then the lights came back on. Every time i start the car there is a sort of grinding noise that i can feel if i have my foot on the break at start up. A few friends of mine feel that there is a crook earth somehwere and that the problem is the sensor at all. Has anybody had a similar experience with earthing issues causing the lights to come on and if so what sort of errors did the computer come up with?
The fart on start up is normal if you have your foot on the brake. That is the system doing one of its self tests. If you have your foot on the brake the ABS pump will action against brake pressure for the test.
The earth for the ABS is just in front of your air box. I have actually run an auxiliary earth lead from all my earth points direct to the battery,, and thrown in an engine strap for good luck.
You can get all sorts of ABS faults thrown up from a bad earth, and I guess a good indication of bad earth would be a variety of faults logged. Sensor will log sensor, pump will log pump,,, but if a variety of bits log a fail all at about the same time.?
GOOD LUCK
here is a link that gives test procedures for fault finding, ignore the bit about replacing the modulator it is fixable.http://www.nettechy.com/LRabsBulletin.pdf
thanks guys i'm thinking even more tht its a dodgy earth as when i tok it to LR specialist it cam up with 3 differet faults for the sensor. Somethng about low power supply and two others. I reckon i'll take it back to them and get them to look at all the earths on it
Most sensor faults can be fixed by cleaning the connections as the sensor is sealed it is unlikely to fail..
sensor out put low or intermitent
sensor electical failure
Ecu ground or reference ground fault
These faults will most likely be a connection
The ground connectors are in front of air box (2 s/s nuts)
behind left hand kick panel passangers foot well (1 s/s nut)
next to battery tray (3 s/s nuts) clean with steel wool and refit with jointing grease.
sensor connectors 2 rear on chassis above axle and front 1 on each inside guard close to fire wall. clean and refit. If you are careful you can use a very small screw driver to close the contacts a bit to get a better connection.
Pull and clean plugs on modulator as well.
This should fix 95% of sensor faults...
Cheers
Don't assume the T/C works. I had the three lights come on halfway up a difficult (for me) slope and crest and T/C did not kick in when needed. That is when I learnt about driving with both the brake and accelerator applied which kind of simulates the T/C. Got through the rest of the track that way.
