Why are they breaking? Is it because the legs on the LEDs are thicker?

The part of the holder that is breaking is the little protusion that goes into the housing and locks the holder in place.
They are breaking IMO because the plastic is brittle due to being heated by the bulb for about 12 years whenever the lights are on. The plastic is also very thin.
It doesn't help that the LED leads are thicker so you have less room as the contact is the leads bent around the plastic. If you've seen them you will know what I mean but I can't put it in words. You could always cut the LED lead short and solder on the original bulb leads.
It would be interesting to see if the orange bulb holders are brittle as they are only on when the switch is on. Although they are beside the green one so maybe not much different.
Some I broke in my fingers when pushing the LED into the holder. Others broke when I pushed the holder into place and tried to turn it (due to the thicker lead).
Yes I have had mine out so I understand what you are describing. That is why I suspected the thicker legs on the LEDs was the cause. I'll have to be careful when I do mine

I didn't take any pics.
If I ever have to remove one then I'll take a pic but I'm in no hurry to pull one out.
Although my original one is still only stuffed in the hole and taped so it may fail yet and need to be reaffixed.
