Don't wish to sound too blase but perhaps all it needs is tightening. Slight movement I personally wouldn't consider a major problem.
Hope your mechanic is a good bloke and not a thief.

I happened to be rotating my tyres at the weekend on my '99 D2 TD5 and noticed the passenger side wheel had some slight side ways movement in it even with the nuts done up tight. Mentioned this to my mechanic today in passing (as I thought it was nothing major) and was informed that it could be very major and to leave the car with him for an immediate replacement of the wheel bearing. Apparently if this bearing lets go it can destroy many other parts and be quite a big deal if this happens on the open road.
Anyway, quick heads up for everyone, might be worth throwing the jack under each corner when you get the chance and giving your wheels a bit of a shake to make sure all is in order. Apparently there should be zero movement at all - which is the case for the rest of my wheels thankfully.
Also proved to me that although I try to mention as many things about my car to my mechanic (whilst not wishing to be over sensitive to small issues or be too pedantic) nothing is too small to mention if you are unsure...nothing. I happen to be heading down to Coffs Harbour this weekend with my family and would hate for somthing to fail en route or worse fail with serious consequences.
Merely mentioning this as i did not consider this movement to be serious when clearly it is if not corrrected immediately.

Regrettably the D2 non-adjustable bearing isn't sold separately by LR. They sell the complete hub - about $800.
However, the bearing is available aftermarket for about $300.

Thought that would be the case with the silly d2 sealed bearings in there special hubs ....
Had dobbo here yesterday with a funny noise from his front end so i give him a space suit and the high pressure water lance and showed him how to clean it up thank F@@# it was only dryed up mud causing the noise![]()
Yeah, thought this myself but my mechanic is a good bloke and I trust him 100% with my car. I have questioned some of the things he has done before due to research on this forum and he has always explained in quite some detail, why he does the work in question - to which I have aalways been satisfied with his explanation. He has looked after me and my car very well over the years and I am very comfortable that he will fix, tighten, adjust if needed or replace if needed.
At the end of the day, if you don't know (which I often don't), you have to put your trust in someone you feel comfortable with.
Will keep you posted
we had our son in hospital two years ago, another kid came in one night. His old mans 4wd had broken on the freeway at 110kph, rolled numerous times and put him and his son in hospital he was in a bad way, the boy was in agony, since then I have been a bit pedantic about noises.
I actuallly just dropped in today to show him the water sensor on the fuel filter (well lack of actually) that i ripped out at the weekend (which incidentaly is now replaced) and mentioned this and a couple of other things to him. I always have a list of things to mention to him and sometimes like today, certain things are more serious than others
As a rule, I prefer to replace things knowing that the part is new and working as it was intended - within reason of course and have left other things until later or until my wife is not looking at the bank balance![]()
