the easy solution is to just remove and blank off the vac lines to it and it will remain closed....
a smarter option is to work out which line is the hold closed line and leave that one connected then remove the other one.
Following on from the recent thread about the virtues of doing an EGR bypass on a TD5 - can anyone tell me where I could get one quickly in Brisbane if I wanted to perform the operation, say this week-end?
I'm off to the snow in a week so if I can do it before I go that would be great, if not I'll just wait until the mood strikes me again.
02MY Defender - no coolant connection that I can see. Don't see any need for fancy silicon hoses - just want to rip the useless device out and hook up the existing hose ASAP.

Yeah, I know. But I'd rather do the proper solution of taking it out altogether.
be careful - it may make your engine blow up!!!

Hi Solmanic
There is just the one vac line, get a 3"nail cut 2" off and insert in the vac line on the EGR,get another bit of vac tube fit to nail and EGR job done looks stock.
Ive just done mine, thanks to advice from BradM.
I cleaned my AFM with contact cleaner,a definite improve, but still not good.
The AFM controls the EGR so if your AFM is dirty chances are the EGR is being held open all the time causing the valve seat to get carboned up.I removed the EGR and cleaned it,there was carbon in the valve seat preventing the valve shuting properly.
Now with the EGR disconected I have all my mid/top end back.I held her flat in 4th the other day,got an indicated 140kmh.My speedo is 10% shy due to the tyre size, before the mod 120ks was the best I could get out of 4th.It will also go around corners in 3rd gear without stalling now.HUGE IMPROVEMENT IN DRIVEABILITY.
Hoping to see a return to TD5 economy.
I will be looking at a EGR removal kit to remove the restriction caused by the EGR valve.
Goodluck

What's it like with the EGR cleaned and working properly?
I bet near exactly the same as AFAIK it only works on part throttle to reduce combustion temp, and therefore reduce Nox.

I was watching all this talk with interest about the ERG valve. So in preparation for my Central Australia trip I decided to remove the valve just to check it out.
Well, if you think that having up to 15% of your inlet manifold & Erg valve capacity reduced because of the crap that is in there, well go ahead. I could not believe the amount of black, sooty, oily crud that came out not only the valve but also the inlet manifold.
I spent all day Sunday to remove & replace the inlet manifold and all the associated bits just to clean this crud out. My hands were black and as a result no PICS
My D2 has only done 130,000 k's and to be confronted with this nonsense is just a joke.
In my unprofessional opinion this Erg valve is a poorly designed device so vehicle manufacturers can squeeze through tough environment laws. Don't worry about the consumer, we just cop it again.
What it is doing is slowly choking and killing your engine![]()
