I reckon the "hunting" you experience is the box doing its thing between 4th gear and 4th gear lockup. The spec indicates 78-82 kph (ish) as the lockup point.

Handbrake's 97 D1 auto does the same thing, so when I drive it I try for 75 or 85 - then it doesn't shuffle.

The rest of your prob - 150% agree with Justin - certainly see one of the Eastern suburbs LR experts - perhaps RangeRove in Mitcham, not far from the end of the Eastern Freeway. 98743111. Have a chat to Richard George.

Different size tyres will also confuse the auto box.

The torque converter lockup reacts differently on my 2001 Disco between the two different sets of tyres that I use. eg 18 inch for coastal highways, and I put the 16's on for outback travel where 18's would be difficult to buy.

The Disco likes the 18's at 80kph whereas the 16's like a couple of kph over that otherwise it hunts.

(the knobjockey has now left the room)

Get somebody to hold the accelerator at full noise, dont worry the governor will stop the motor over reving.
Whilst at full noise manipulate the fuel pump end of the throttle,if you are able to get it to rev harder your throttle cable needs adjusting or replacing.
Worth a look, common problem on smaller diesel motors.

Sorry for hijacking this post early on but I thought that I would post the latest on my 300 Tdi Disco problems.

I was having a good old sook about buying this car as I was having what I thought, too many problems and had spent much money fixing things.

I had oil leaking under the turbo, a lack of power and it was hunting between gear changes. After a recent visit to Off Road FWD Parts in Geelong Road Brooklyn, he changed the big intercooler hose and replaced the inlet manifold gasket that was broken in many pieces, the car is now running like a champion. Plenty of go, no leaks and no odd gear hunting. I have gone through the hate stage and now am finally a happy camper. I got that Little Black Box wiring sorted and I fitted it all in and all is good.

Smooth running TDI is a sweet thing. The hunting of the auto may be fixed with a pump tickle up. I had alway accepted that the 'House' that replaced the timing belt on my TDI had done a good job and that SSide would have picked up if anything was wrong. But when I finally went to MR they couldn't believe how far off the timing was. After a pump tickle it goes like a TD5!! and it doesn't hunt gears on the M1 like it used to towing the van.
