he gain if it even works is minimal. Car makers go to extreme lengths to make laminar flow from the rear of a vehicle. The little V shaped pieces are going to disturb flow more than laminate it. If you carries a giant piece of honeycomb then perhaps it might help, but meh. To achieve perfect flow, turblulent flow is required on the surface, in the1-5mm region, so as to reduce friction. And the rest is laminar. there is no way that laminar flow can be achieved off the back of a 4wd. It wil lcreate a huge vacuum, regardless. in such conditions, turbulent flow is better anyhow. nmothing can fix the hideous aerodynamics of a flat tailgate.

Screw that for a joke.

That isn't entirely correct. You can't fix them but they can be improved. Look at the golf ball. Who would have thought what the little dimples could do.

Don't think landrover stuck the defender in a wind tunnel. Probably didn't want to know.

Yes, I think they were hoping it would spend most of it's time doing what it is designed to do.
Unfortunately in this country especially, this is not the case.
Many hours can be spent on highways at or dare I say it above the speed limit, here in QLD this is certainly common.

Its the biggest load of BS I heard since people swore blind fitting cyclones into their air intake makes more power.

The reference to aircraft using such technology is very twisted, it is used on aircraft wing tips for vortex reduction, it is not and cannot be used on the wings trailing edge. And for that one reason it wont work on a vehicle as displayed. Anyways, a defender or Disco will never win any friends in a wind tunnel, its nothing more than a brick.

An aerodynamic Defender? Whatever next?

The best, by far, way to improve the aerodynamics of a Defender is to remove the roof altogether, lower the windscreen and fit a cover over the unfilled seats. Well, it works for 50's Brit sportscars :D

Seriously lads, you get 10l/100 in a vehicle that has a load capacity of a ton (give or take a little) or seating for up to 10, and can be dismantled with a couple of shifting spanners and screwdrivers. It's enough! you don't need 5% better economy!

Proven on a wing where obtaining laminar flow at a cruise speed is essential in reducing fuel consumption where a known reynolds number dicatates how the airfoil section behaves within its lift/drag coefficient.

It WILL NOT work at a variety of speeds on a slow moving car relative to an aircraft wing that is designed to cruise. Flow seperation is a function of wing profile and air speed. It is pure nonsense for something that cant cruise for long hours at its most economic speed.

I wont get into the other physics behind wings, its a waste of bandwidth and I think enough people see this gizmo for what it is.

You'd get a similar fuel saving by keeping your tyre pressures correct and having clean air/fuel filters.

Scrambler nailed it, an aerodynamic defender :D

One of the prime things he stated was a noticeable lack of dirt/bull dust on the rear window and tailgate.

When he opens the door not as much dust falls in the disco now...

And in the wet he tells me the rear window stays clearer with a noticeable difference in the lack of road spray on the glass.
