Yep, as mentioned, I would be handing your mechanic a list for him to check off and would add to the above lists; Crank angle sensor, sticking waste gate.
I feel your pain and have had similar problems with my '99 manual TD5 Disco. I have replaced virtually every sensor on the car and have had the oil in the ecu problems fixed......now she is is running great and has been for about a year now:angel::D It would appear very challenging to chase issues on a TD5 given there are so many variaable but stick with it and good luck.
Aye, Mick
not that many variables really you just need to know the engine. The td5 has what in old school mechanics circles are considered very undiesle engineering ideas applied. If your greaser isnt intimately farmiliar with the operating principals of the engine and its sub systems then hes going to do a lot of costly guessing and giggling, things like the way the EGR is operated, the way that the fuel system is operated.
Id be willing to bet that at least 50-60% of automotive repair shops that deal with diesel 4x4's have never seen a diesel engine with Electonicaly managed unit direct injectors with constant combustion pressure mapping and an EGR valve on the inlet manifold side of a wastegated turbo charger. Especially one that also has electronic input of the air temp and inlet manifold pressure. On top of all of this its also made out of aluminium and has the MP fuel gallery integral to the head. Even if theyve seen em do you reckon they can diagonse and fix em?
Be honest, (tomby, inc, Zook and the like exempted) how many of who own the TD5, in any rover, honestly understand whats written above? You own it how do you think a mechanic who doesnt own one, and wouldnt normally work on it other than changing the oil filters and coolant would know any better?
give the same guy a turbo suzi 3.9 however and I bet you could chuck any half accurate list of symptoms at him and hed nail it in less than 5 minutes.
Thanks Baz,
I have already accepted the offer. The dealer where I had the car 'fixed' 4+ weeks ago is less than luke warm about looking at it again!!! It is still a warranty claim! L.R.A. replied to my e-mail history of 'break downs' but just try contacting 'them' you just get put on a seemingly endless queue. L.R.U.K. doesn't have an e-mail contact that I can discover - They built the machine! Back to the RAA legal/technical people tomorrow and Consumer Affairs,
Cheers
Michael
Michael,
Try this address...it's the corporate business centre and should be able to put you in touch with the 'customer service team'..

I used them when I had problems on my old Disco back in UK..
Good luck !
cheers...
Sorry I can't help with your problem but I know what you're going through. I managed to get an email to LR UK who just sent it back to LRA who once again told me to go back to my dealer or another dealer. I went to the next nearest dealer, being aware that it was owned by the same person but thought that at least a different set of mechanics might be more helpful, but to no avail. I eventually solved the problem myself by borrowing another MAF - such a simple solution after so much trouble.
Considering that the poor bloke has been taking the vehicle back to the LR appointed dealer in Adelaide for his (so far) unsuccessful repairs, I reckon he's got a right to expect someone there to know how to fix the fuggin thing, even if they don't own one themselves (apart from the dozen or so out on the forecourt). :p
Paul:)
