I use a ball joint seperator, ground the guts out to suit, occasionally a bit of heat if need be and a bottle jackto put some load on![]()
any ideas on how to remove the tapered end of the A frame ball joint from it's housing on the axle? its still in situ on the vehicle and refusing to budge.
thanks.

Purchase a can of YIELD as well...
Spray it on, leave it 10 minutes....
It helps things break away.....

Undo the nut, but leave it screwed on a few turns. Then give the back of the housing on the diff (where the balljoint taper is) a couple of good cracks with a big hammer. This compresses the taper from the sides and pops the ball joint out. Leaving the nut on a few turns ensures that it doesn't fly apart a injure you (or any bystanders).
This technique works for all ball joints, but does require that you can get a good swing with the hammer and that the joint is well supported. It is also much easier and safer than a ball joint puller/separator.

done!!
i placed a jack underneath the fulcrum, lifted it up to take some weight and then gave the bottom of the ball joint a whack with the nut undone a couple of turns.
expect more questions when i try and put it all back together again!
thanks to all who answered.
