    Unsure...HELP

    Hi guys,

When I started looking for a Land Rover TDI, one of the blokes I was gonna buy it from said to let it warm up and again when we arrived back from the test drive, let it warm down/ settle. So up untill now I have been doing this?

A work mate saw me warming her up said that I should not do this as I would glaze the engine over (as he was a truck driver and he knew). So I am really unsure of what to do in this situation?

    HELP, Cal

How long are letting it warm up for ,

I start my Tdi let it idle for about 30 seconds and drive off

Most car companys say not to let the engine idle for long periods

And yes let it idle down after a fast or hard drive as your turbo is hot and can be spinning up to 100.000 rpm and if you shut the motor down straight away there is no oil feed to the turbo when it is still spinning at high RPM

About a 50 second idle after a drive is enough

I think two things are being confused.

    1. turbochargers should no be shut off while still very hot and rotating rapidly, as it is likely to cause the oil in the bearings to overheat and cause bearing damage. This is why "turbo timers" were invented to idle the engine for perhaps 30 seconds after you turn the key off. In practice there should be no problem if the last thirty seconds to a minute of driving has been at small throttle openings, which, when you think about it, is the normal situation.

    2. All diesels will glaze the bores if idled or operated at small throttle openings for very long, but we are talking here about times longer than a few of minutes, not half a minute, and the susceptibility of engines varies. Although few do it, it is good practice to shut off the engine when stopped in traffic, and certainly staying parked for extended periods with no load except the aircon is not a good idea, although it is often done.

So whether it is a good or reprehensible paractice to run the engine after stopping, really depends on how long we are talking about. There is no need to idle the engine on startup longer than is required for oil to get to everywhere, perhaps ten seconds after the oil light goes out. Full power should be avoided if possible until the temperature is up to normal, but it is best to drive off as soon as the oil light is out.

I usually let it warm up for 2-5min depending on how late I am! My mate at work said to start it, take off... but don't burn rubber (step on it) and let it run in/ warm up that way.

So approx. 30 sec (to warm down) ?

The manual says not to warm up. Just drive.
I start the engine, put the seat belt on then back it out and wait while the garage door shuts then drive off gently. Going up through the gears slowly.
The manual also says to let it run for about 10 seconds before shutting down. Longer if stopping after higher speeds.
