G'day all,
Over the last couple of drives with my baby I've noticed she wanted to drift to left - it was very very slight, but it was there.
I didn't pay any attention because I was planning to rotate the wheels this weekend anyway.
So today I rotated the tyres and now my front passenger tyre rubs on the radius arm when I'm near full left-hand-down lock!
To explain I have 6 rims and tyres which I bought for my trip up to Cape York last year (see report in trip report section), hence the tyres at least are all the same - 750xR16's.
The rim in question is the odd-man-out in that it's black. I had 5 rims to start with and scrounged this one from god-knows-where to give me a 6th rim for my trip up the Cape. I think it's from a Series III but I always thought it was interchangeable so didn't pay any attention.
On the trip up the Cape it was one of the spares and was never used. When I got back from the Cape I rotated the tyres and put my 2 spares on the back and my 2 backs on the front, hence the 2 fronts became the spares.
Now that I've rotated them again (same methodology) the black rim is on the front and I've noticed the rubbing (trust me I would have noticed if I had done it before, it's rather noticable at low speed - I'd hate to have found out at anything about 5-10kph).
As far as I know they never use to rub, it's certainly the first time I've noticed.
I'm worried the black rim may have a different offset? Is there any way to check this? Otherwise I'm off to a steering specialist next week for them to do a full steering check / wheel alignment / etc.
On an aside if anyone has a set of 6 (or less) steel rims from a Series I Discovery they would like to dispose of (or know where to get some from) please P.M. me as I would like to change my entire set to Discovery I rims anyway - and that would probably solve my current dilema (as long as it's an issue with the rims and not something to do with the radius arm being out-of-kilter).

You may well find that the 'unknown' rim has a diferent offset.
Get them side-by-side and measure them.
M
Your odd rim has more positive offset than the others.
The rubbing should not be very drastic, I had 37" tyres that used to rub on my radius arms all day long and they never cause me a problem at any speed.
If you think it could be a problem than it must be rubbing very badly.
I find it hard to think you didn't notice the rim on the rear as it would have sat under the vehicle more (less width) on that side.
I rule!!!
2.4" of Pure FURY!!!
You'd be surprised what you can't see if you don't stare at the back of your vehicleAlso it's only noticable at close to full lock so the lugs are rubbing on the radius arm and sending vibrations and nasty noise all through the vehicle...
I got the local Bob-Jane to swap the tyres ($25) and rubbing is all gone, so thank you all for your feedback it definately sounds like the offset.
Can you change the offset of a rim or would it be easier just to look for another standard defender rim?
it can be done, but for what its worth ide just look for another rim.
cheers phil
As far as I am aware, there is no difference between later SIII LWB rims & Defender standard steel rims, both 5 1/2" wide & same offset. Earlier LWB rims & here I'm not sure if we're talking SIIa or even SI had a greater back spacing, ie were set further inboard. It may be possible to get it changed but I wouldn't have thought it was worth the hassle. Those Discovery rims sound like the way to go, but you might want to think about going to 235/85s on them as they are getting out there width wise for 7.50s. Plenty have run them this way I know but maybe more likely to roll a tyre off the rim at reduced pressures.
Steve.
grizzly I am half thinking of changing back to defender rims if you want to try my disco rims on 235/85s (I have 7 rims/tyres + a 265/75 (?) rim/tyre)
