Thread: Disco 300tdi aircon idler - advice needed

The newer versions of the pulley have a waterproof cover - it may be that it is the cover you are looking at. It should lever off to reveal the bolt. And, if you haven't already discovered (Pardon the pun) the trick - the generic rubber sided seal 6203 is replaceable and is about $10 at most Bearing suppliers.

Buy 2 bearings, then you will have a spare for the main drive belt tensioner pulley...#6203

It's a steel flat disc that if you just give it a light tap in the middle with a Ball and Pein hammer it will just fall out.

I left mine off, I dont see changing the bearing a little sooner being a huge problem or cost.

You can get the 6203 in steel seals, got some today for a motor bike rear wheel bearing but at about $20 maybe a bit pricey for some.

Is this the same as the Defender one?

Mine is cactus and needs to be replaced.

Whats the "cheapest" way to do it.

Any help would be appreciated.

a big thannks to all who responded - turned out to be straighforward job easily completed - and yes I think the 300tdi def is the same.

I hope the following info is useful...

job is cheap enough - 6203s are $6 ea at the local bearing shop

the aircon belt adjustment idler takes the same bearing so I did it as well at the same time - the mounting bolts for both idlers just unscrew from the front (13mm socket)

after removing the eyed circlip press the bearing out (to the fron) in the vice with a suitably sized socket that bears on the outer part of the bearing - then just put the new one in and everything else back the way you got it off and tension the belt as per manual - job done

While I was at it I decided to replace the main drive belt tensioner pulley bearing - same bearing - 6203 - but in this case it is retained by a 1mm thick almost impossible to remove internal circlip -
now here's the interesting bit in case you didn't know -
if you cut/break/mangle that #*%1ng circlip getting it out you can buy a 6203ZZ bearing (still $6) which has that same circlip attached.
