    torque converter??

I have a rattle type noise coming from the gearbox area. It comes in at 2250 rpm and goes around 2600rpm.Hard to discribe but sounds like a loose inspection plate type rattle.Removed muffler reset exhaust pipe (no change) removed tailshafts and checked unis etc(all good).
Can make the noise standing still (handbrake on and footbrake).
It does not seem to make the noise when converter is locked up(over 80 kpa).
I'm thinking of pulling torque converter out and opening up to check bearing failure or l/u clutch. also ring gear and plate.
    Has anyone experenced this problem?????
    It's a 00 disco td5 auto with about 125000 clicks.
Please tell me I've missed something before I pull the thing apart.(getting to old for this crap)
    cheers Brian.

I suggest that you find someone with a hoist, and put it on, start it up, and you should soon see where the noise originates.

good luck to you if its your flex plate once they start to "ring, chatter, chime or clatter" theres no telling how much life theyve got left in them before total spectacular failure.

If you can drop the front half moon cover off the bell housing, you might be able to see the plate. I could on mine and could see it was broken.
