    High Pitch squeaking whistle.

I found another thread that stated they had a "squeaking whistle" from around the engine.

Seems I've recently got the same noise in my Disco 96 V8i.
The other thread worked out it was an exhaust /or/ inlet manifold gasket. It seems around the same time this started a few weeks ago - I was also felt lagging on acceleration and some fluttering sounds which seem to all be symptoms.

I noticed my drivers side exhaust manifold is much more red (hot rusty) looking in colour than the other side being an old brown colour.

How can I double check to ensure this is really the problem ??

I would do it myself but time is the killer - What kind of time/costs would you think to replace these gaskets ?

It could have been my thread.

Does yours sqeal more when you back off the throttle?

Mine did and it was a leaking intake manifold gasket. The bolts holding my intake were loose.
I imagine tightening the bolts would have fixed it but I changed the gasket as I was doing more work at the time.

No idea about your exhaust manifold colours.

Jeez, I thought the topic was a follow up to the lightning strike story.

    Thanks UteMad !!
Yes it does squeal more when off the throttle - mainly heard at idle speed.

By the most con-incidental chance I just saw your thread just before reading your comments.

Do you say that I need to take off the Plenum chamber to do up the bolts on the intake manifold ???
Can these be accessed and tightened without taking off 300 other parts ??

    - haven't yet had a chance to look at it carefully.

To fix my leak I took the intake manifold off and replaced the gasket along with the two end rubbers which were leaking oil big time. I took it off for other reasons though (I dropped a couple of hydraulic lifters - oops).

However I reckon I could have gotten to the intake manifold bolts (the ones that were loose at least) without dismantling the lot (or any of it). However there isn't much to taking the plenum chamber off. If you follow the directions on the RAVE CD and have the correct sealant for the plenum on hand then it could be done pretty quick. Take the opportunity to seal up the passenger side tappet cover if it is leaking too.
The bolts that were causing my leak were finger tight so they wouldn't be hard to spot when you put a spanner on them.
