D1a Air Con has a mind of its own ??

Ive noted latly when towing our camper the air con switchs itself on for no reason (air con switch off)......Its usally happens after about 30+min driving, weather can be hot or not.

Is it possible that the switch needs a good clean as its making contact with something souldent be?

    Any takers pls?

PS Im not runing thermo fans at the mo (if that can make any differance), wife is picking them up today for me......just need to make some "Fish" brackets up

From RAVE it appears that the AC on my disco is the same as in your 97. My impression of the AC circuits is that there are interlocks that will turn the AC off if either pressure in the refrigerant drops below a certain point or the temperature in the coolant rises above a certain point. Either the lack of thermo fans whilst towing is causing the temp rise or your ac may need regassing. My bet is after the therno's go back on all will be well.

Is it the AC or just the blower in the cabin? It's very typical of Disco's for the blower to shut off, when set on 4, after 30 or so minutes then the resistor cools off and it starts again. Since I am told this is deep within the dash I'll choose to live with the blower on 3 and be satisfied that the volume control on my Guitar amplifier goes to 11..

Mine does that too. Position 4 seems intermitent at times. Although I very rarely use 4 if at all. Although I have yet to go through a typical Qld Summer with this car.

    BUT his switches ON.
This is a mystery surrounded by a conundrum.
It must be something to do with the switch shorting out. How else would it get power to go, unless there is some additional wiring that has been added to the car.

I wonder if the wiring of the thermo fans is somehow incorrect and when they turn on, it feeds current to the aircon side of the aircon switch.
I would take it to an auto electrician , as ther eis something wrong in the wiring for this to happen.

You do not have a manual switch for your fans by any chance? If so you need a diode in circuit , or a number of relays to stop electrical feed back to the aircon clutch cicuit.

Not related but....... (well maybe worth a shot!)

When I was working as a lacky for a fridgy in Darwin we got called out to a house with a split system that would randomly turn itself on and off, and all sorts of random things.

You could walk across the room and the aircon would turn on or off or the fan speed would change.

After checking everything out the conclusion was the control circuit board in the head unit must be suss. As he was pulling it out a well fried Gecko dropped on the floor.

It must have been moving around slightly shorting different circuits out as you moved.

Circuit board back in and all was well.
