When I did the belt in my daughter's Disco, the belt I bought was the same as was on it - it was the wrong one and the tensioner was under a lot of tension - in fact it was damaged. The correct belt was longer.

Also, doesn't a Defender use a different belt to the Disco - something about the front of engine layout being different?

Note that the belt for the Defender 300Tdi varies depending on engine no.

    HYM865 to engine no. 16L25164
    HYM1174 from engine no. 16L25165

    Ahh, just checked Disco:

ERR3287 for 1995 model year only (MA models)
ERR5911 for 1996 onward (TA onwards)

I'd say you've got the wrong belt.

I've just downloaded and checked the Dayco catalogue for you Wazza. You've definitely got the correct belt.
The next size up in the 4 rib is 4PK1395. The 1395 indicates the length (in mm) and is way too long to suit.
The one you have has to fit! I'm just about to head out and can come home via Oxenford if you want. Give me a call if you're still stuck - 0416210889

Thanks everyone for your help this morning.

Was a huge effort to get it to fit but now it is purring along with hardly any pressure needed from the tensioner.

    Thanks for you offer paul.

Thats a great thing about landrovers and this site.

    A wealth of knowledge.

I've seen so many errors in after-market catalogues that I no longer trust them.

I agree. I did both belts at the same time and there was no way that the listed replacement for the serpentine belt was going to fit. I ended up getting one 5mm longer. With the A/C belt, there is nothing else close for length.

When I tried to get a Dayco belt to fit my BMW, they did not make one the same length as the factory Continental? belt,
So it may be that Dayco do not make the correct length.
Also (unbelievably for BMW) the factory belt was only about 8 bucks dearer, 70vs 78. It pays to check the exact specs.
    Regards Philip A
