    D1 auto clunk revisited

    People,
    This subject has been done & done again but here's a point I've been unable to find in various searches:
    I get the biggest 'clunk' when shifting drive-neutral-reverse. Why then is there no clunk whatsoever when the car is cold?
    Is it a lube thing, and if so how about a heavier oil in the TC?

    Maybe because when you are starting up cold the handbrake is on and holding the driveline?

    One thought is that the ZF transmission "pumps up" after hot idleing for a bit and retains pressure in certain parts of the system that cause it to engage rather violently.. It's a problem over here and many a BMW, Jag and Land Rover have had their transmissions damaged at emmisions testing stations when the cars sit and idle a lot.. I hear it's worse when the filter is dirty and the transmission is over full.. Of course the emmisions testing joint don't and neither do ZF, BMW, Jag or Land Rover so we're stuck with it. The factory fix came after 1995 I believe but I've heard even later ZF's can be a trouble..

    I've just tried with and without hand/foot brake and it's actually worse without; except, of course, for cold starting where other than a slight rock to the left, you wouldn't know reverse had been engaged!

    Mine 'does it' big time, but until you mentioned 'it doesn't' when cold, I never noticed.

    Curiously tho' (as I reverse from the road down my driveway), when I shift from d to r, but not completely stopped 'it doesn't'....

    The problem of the clutch pressure was fixed in 1987.
    It does not apply to RRC 3.9 or Disco.

    Maybe your stepper is dirty and slow to come down to correct no load speed in neutral. Try shifting to neutral, waiting until the revs come down to about 750, then changing into reverse.
    If you have adjusted your base idle up so that the stepper is not controlling the idle this may happen also.
