9l of oil and i use a fully synthetic

remove the air trunk to the air filter first and use one of those seatbelt on a metal bar type filter wrenches that you turn with a 1/2 inch ratchet. for the removable filter

for the centrifuge filter I remove it with a 1/4 inch socket set but put the bolts in with the screwdriver handle attachement and then go +1/6th of a turn

if you look at the pics in the 13th post of This thread the fifth one shows the centrifuge filter housing under the turbo compressor inlet. the 2 bolts are circled in red.

I use CASTROL 'EDGE" Sport 5W/30 fully synthetic in my '99 Td5 130" crew cab (available from Super***) at HomeMaker Village in Darwin.

I change mine along with the spin-off filter each 6 months or 3000km whichever comes first. I change the rotor-filter each second oil change. Be careful with tightening the dome cover on the rotor filter as the bolts easily strip the housing thread if over-tightened and it doesnot take much.

I buy my filters from British Off Road in QLD. but if you need them in a hurry then LandRover Mitsubishi in Stuart Park carry most of them at a very inflated price.

im not a big fan of castrol.......penrite is my choice of oils......

i use penrite HPR diesel 5......................

i change it pretty much every 5,000kms along with both filters........

I have heardof castrol oil referred to as sump sludge and seen the reason why it earnt this name with an old alloy head ford 6 that had been run on GTX2, engine did 150,000 ks and started rattling and being silly, usually I condemn the cam and lifters as the cams are quiet soft in the alloys but this engine when u dropped the rocker cover and sump had thicky slimy sludgey smeg on the underside and sides, yucky!, love penrite oils , even nicer with some proma friction reducer in it. The TDs are turbo diesels yes? wouldnt u run a diesel oil like velo or rimula x and carbon reducer occasionally

you could but a good synthetic or even semi synthetic has all that stuff in it anyway. and the Td5 has the centrifuge filter that does a great job of pulling out the soot from the oil. Amazing how tech Ive seen on engines that are older than I am is coming back to the forefront again....

thanks for all your thoughts guys. I;ve got the filters and oil and plan to sweat it out in the darwin heat this arvo. I'll proably need to give my self an oil change afterwards, but with the old amber fluid.

I am with Defender Zook - I use Penrite HPR 5 and change every 5K. I would not use any other oil. I buy this from super cheap for about $65 for 10 litres.

You can actually take the oil filter out without unbolting anything. I used to take off the engine cover, the heat shield and all, like in the manual, until someone on this forum told me you can change it as is. It is easy to get out, a bit more fiddly to get in, but still quicker than unbolting everything...

Try it – you would be surprised…

Where do you fit the extra litre and a half of oil?

7.5 litres will fill it from empty even when changing both filters.
