best oil solvent to soak ECU harness in?

Hi - had my TD5 injector and ECU harnesses replaced under warranty, and now have the old ones soaking in meths for emergency spares as per some advice on this forum. Even though the loom had a lot of oil in it, the meths doesn't seem to be particularly effective in removing it. Anyone had success with an alternative - e.g. maybe flush briefly with turps and then 'rinse' with meths?

i cut the end of a funnel so it was the same size as the plug fitted over the blue seal then pulled it as high as it would go... filled the funnel up with meths and left it gravity etc obviously allows the meths to penetrate.. although i wasnt over the moon about the way the meths went through.... seemed like it was a bit too thick.. isopropyl alcohol would work at a guess.. but yes any alcohol based stuff can kill some plastics.

i cant see soaking doing anything as you need to push the oil out..

    Thanks

isopro is excellent at cleaning stuff but it evaporates VERY quickly. You would need to keep it enclosed in something/?

Pity you can't buy pressure packs of freon anymore, what about circuit board cleaner, it's designed to be kind to plastics.

ISOPRO does evaporate quickly but not that quickly. So you would need a fair amount of time for a cupful to evaporate.

Yes Meths or Isopropyl alcohol will do it, but I would suggest getting some shellite, then with a cotton bud, rub it on all the different plastic surfaces, then if there is no reaction, (as i suspect there will not be) use it first, then flush with ISO. This will flush out the shellite. If you leave shellite in then there will be a very very very very fine film of oil. (You will NOT be able to see it with the naked eye).

The reason why a reccomend shellite is that it is totally oil soluable being a petroleum based spirit and being the same weight as oil but thin as ISO.

This solution I tink would work but I would not reccomend it in the ECU itself. For that I would, like you try contact cleaner.

I could sugesst another product and it WILL get rid of all the oil, but also the plastic. So better leave that alone

    Contact Cleaner

    G’day,
You could try CO2 Contact Cleaner comes in a spray can. It’s good for cleaning oil off, however sometimes leaves a white film. I’ve not had any issues with plastics, other than the film.
